  • Great little car

    We really like our Fiat 500x. It has 3 drive modes that really change its performance. It has a 9 speed transmission so changing the RPM in which it shifts really change how the car drives. It’s got standard, traction control, sport. Sport mode makes a huge difference and drives like a little race car. It’s very peppy and quick. Traction control in conjunction with our snow tires makes it pretty user friendly in the winter. We do wish we got the AWD edition. Lots of room for a little car. Seats fold down and make for a decent cargo area. All in all a great little metro cruiser for us.
  • Stylish but temperamental

    Last June I traded my 2015 FIAT 500 Pop for a 2017 FIAT 500X Pop. The exterior styling of the 500X is well-proportioned particularly in comparison to the smaller two-door 500. In my opinion FIAT has done a better job in translating the 500's design cues to the 500x than the MINI Cooper has done with the comparable Countryman. The interior quality is leaps and bounds better than the 500. For the 500, the cheap plastic cover to the USB port broke on day 2 of car ownership, and I had to remove the cracked driver's armrest and replace with an after-market one (evidently the armrest is a common design fault for 500 owners). In contrast, the 500x is replete with soft-touch materials and padded armrests with a decent center console, dual glove compartments, and the same body panel-colored piece on a dashboard that is both simple and intuitive. The seats are firm yet comfortable and the design (a checkered grey insert with white tubing around the black seats) were distinctive but tasteful. My biggest gripe with driving the 500X is the 9-speed automatic transmission, which has been maddeningly temperamental and unpredictable. At times the shifts will be smooth and unobtrusive, and the smallish hatchback will feel agile and negotiable around tight turns and between lanes in highway traffic. However, my positive driving experiences are balanced by frequently lagging and slow shifts, creating either a jumpy or plodding ride. I really want to like the 500X, and at times the car can offer a pleasurable driving experience, especially as the engine noise has a lively purr. But daily driving a 500X is like having a very moody friend: some days are sanguine, other days are saturnine. This FIAT certainly keeps me interested, but not knowing what car I am driving (i.e. what mood the transmission will be in on any given day) can be incredibly infuriating.
  • Bad reliability, bad service

    At the end of the day a car should be about reliability, right? In the time Ive had this vehicle, and with only around 13K miles, it has been in the shop 9 times! Granted, five of those times were for the same issue which the dealer inexplicably couldnt fix (malfunctioning collision mitigation system), but it has also had a door handle break, a broken speaker, a broken rear deck handle and now an engine light with the message drive selection mode not available. The dealer has had this car for weeks on end, and for the current issue hasnt even looked at it despite having it for nearly two weeks now! Each time I take it in they try to deny me the loaner car that came with the 3K enhanced warranty I purchased and I have to argue to get one. Its been a terrible experience and I would steer people clear from this vehicle...it is simply poorly made and the reliability reflects that. Ive even tried to work through Fiat HQ, and they offer little help. Its all very sad.
